A few weeks ago, I was listening to the Catalyst Podcast, where John Maxwell was talking about his book, The Fifteen Invaluable Laws of Growth. One of the laws that are in his book is the Law of the Rubber Band. Maxwell says that a rubber band can only be of use if it is stretched. As a matter of fact, its purpose built to be stretched! In the same way a rubber band is made to expand, our Heavenly Father also built us to expand continually.
1. Flexible Are you willing to budge? Are you walking around looking for confirmation of your wisdom or do you have clear eyes and a open heart to the truth? We will only grow if we are willing to ask hard questions, then act on the information we find.
2. Connected- In John 5:15 Jesus says “”I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. In the same way a rubber band loses its strength when it breaks its connection, we can lose our purpose and stop growing the way God intended if we break connection with Him.
3. Persistent- If you stretch a rubber band once it will only go so far until its connection breaks, but if you allow the rubber band to stretch multiple times, to stretch and then retreat, you will achieve much greater results! In the same way, we must allow ourselves permission to fail. To try and fall short, only to get up and try again. Maxwell says in this book Falling Forward that “Success is just a pile of failures that that you are standing on top of”.
If we want to better serve our Church, our customers, our employers, and our families. We must embrace the Law of The Rubber Band! How have you used these principles to grow in your life?
